Botanical source and history
Coffea arabica L., belonging to the Rubiaceae family, is a tropical shrub or small tree native to the high mountain forests of southwestern Ethiopia. The Arabica species comprises approximately 60–70% of global coffee production; the remaining 30–40% is predominantly Coffea canephora (Robusta).
Coffee's human history, according to legend in Ethiopia, begins in the 9th century when goat herder Kaldi noticed his goats became energized after eating coffee berries. In the 15th century, coffee as a beverage became widespread in Yemen; in the 16th century, coffeehouses became cultural centers in the Ottoman Empire. "Turkish coffee" is listed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Coffee seeds contain 10–17% oil, and this oil is a valuable byproduct of the coffee processing industry.

Fatty acid composition
Coffee oil contains: linoleic acid (40–50%), palmitic acid (25–35%), oleic acid (5–10%), stearic acid (5–10%), and arachidic acid (2–5%). High linoleic acid content is significant in terms of its potential contribution to skin ceramide synthesis.
Cafestol and kahweol: unique diterpenes
The most important feature distinguishing coffee oil from other plant-based oils is its content of cafestol and kahweol diterpenes, found almost exclusively in coffee in nature. These two compounds constitute 10–20% of the coffee oil lipid fraction. In a comprehensive review published by Speer and Kölling-Speer (2006) in Brazilian Journal of Plant Physiology, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials of these diterpenes were evaluated.
Chlorogenic acid
Green (unroasted) coffee oil is particularly rich in chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is a potent polyphenolic antioxidant with free radical scavenging capacity. The roasting process significantly reduces chlorogenic acid content — for this reason, green coffee oil may be preferred in cosmetic formulations.
Caffeine
Roasted coffee oil also contains caffeine. In the cosmetics industry, caffeine is widely used as a topical vasoconstrictor, lipolysis stimulant, and active ingredient in anti-cellulite formulations. Topical caffeine is also being researched in the context of eye care products to reduce puffiness and dark circle appearance.

Antioxidant potential
In a study conducted by Wagemaker and colleagues (2011), the potential use of green coffee oil as an antioxidant source in cosmetic formulations was evaluated. Coffee oil's cafestol, kahweol, tocopherol, and chlorogenic acid content provide strong total antioxidant capacity. Significant free radical scavenging activity was reported in in vitro DPPH and ORAC tests.
UV filtration research
The UV absorption capacity of coffee oil has been researched. Chlorogenic acid and caffeine are UV-absorbing compounds. Green coffee oil's in vitro SPF value has been reported at approximately 3–4. This value is far below the SPF standards in cosmetic sunscreens — it must absolutely not be used as sole sun protection. However, it may be considered as an additional UV protection layer in formulations.
Skin care context
Coffee oil's emollient properties are associated with its linoleic and palmitic acid content. Linoleic acid plays a critical role in maintaining skin barrier function through ceramide synthesis. The anti-inflammatory potential of cafestol and kahweol diterpenes is also being researched in cosmetic context.
Safety profile
Coffee oil is generally considered safe for topical use. The CIR panel has evaluated the safety of Coffea arabica-derived cosmetic ingredients. No serious adverse effects have been reported. Rare allergic reactions are possible. Due to caffeine content, mild redness (vasodilation) may be observed at high concentrations — this is a transient effect. Coffee oil's comedogenic potential is assessed as low to moderate.
Caffeine and pregnancy
Systemic absorption from topical caffeine application is low. However, considering potential risks of high caffeine intake in pregnancy, pregnant individuals are advised to be cautious with high caffeine concentration topical products. In soap formulations, caffeine concentration is very low and should not be a concern.
Circular economy perspective
Coffee oil production is an excellent example of circular economy principles. Coffee seed oil, a byproduct of the coffee industry, is transformed into a cosmetic ingredient, reducing waste and expanding the value chain. Coffee seed shell (silverskin), coffee pulp, and coffee oil — all are increasingly attracting interest as "upcycled ingredients" in the cosmetics industry.
Green coffee oil vs. roasted coffee oil
Two different types of coffee oil are used in cosmetic applications:
- Green coffee oil: Extracted from unroasted seeds. Rich in chlorogenic acid, low caffeine content, light greenish-yellow color, subtle green-botanical aroma.
- Roasted coffee oil: Extracted from roasted seeds. Richer in caffeine, lower chlorogenic acid content, dark brown color, strong coffee aroma.

Saponification value and usage rate
Coffee oil's SAP value (NaOH) is approximately 0.133 — very close to olive oil (0.134). In soap recipes, it is used at 5–15% concentration. Adding as a superfat post-trace is also common practice.
Properties it adds to soap
Coffee oil adds a subtle coffee aroma (more pronounced with roasted oil), brownish tone, antioxidant support, and moisturizing feel to soap.
