Shea butter (karite oil), Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertn. (formerly: Butyrospermum parkii, Sapotaceae family), is a tropical plant-based oil extracted from the fruit of this tree, semi-solid and cream-colored at room temperature. Known as the "women's gold" of West Africa, shea butter provides an excellent balance between hardness and moisturization in soap-making, with its stearic acid (35-50%) and oleic acid (40-55%) composition. In Chailea recipes, it is one of the most commonly used supplementary oils, alongside coconut oil. Botanical source and cultural significance

Vitellaria paradoxa, native to the savanna zone (Sahel) of West and Central Africa, is a slow-growing tree reaching 15-20 meters in height. It takes 15-20 years to bear its first fruit and can live over 200 years. Shea butter production has traditionally been performed by women and is the livelihood of approximately 16 million African women. Women's cooperatives in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria are at the center of this production; Fair Trade and organic certified shea butter economically strengthens these communities.

The shea tree is also ecologically critical: it prevents erosion in the Sahel zone, enriches soil, and supports biodiversity. It is not suitable for plantation agriculture—it grows naturally in wild forests; therefore, felling shea trees is prohibited in many West African countries.

Fatty acid composition

Stearic acid (C18:0) 35-50%, oleic acid (C18:1) 40-55%, linoleic acid 5-9%, palmitic acid 3-7%. High stearic acid adds hardness to soap, high oleic acid adds moisturizing feel.

Unsaponifiable fraction: 5-17%

Shea butter has one of the highest unsaponifiable fractions (5-17%) among all plant-based oils. This fraction contains triterpene alcohols (α-amyrin, β-amyrin, lupeol, butyrospermol), tocopherols (vitamin E), phytosterols, and allantoin. The unsaponifiable fraction does not participate in the saponification reaction and remains free in the soap—these components are the source of shea butter soap's distinctive emollient character.

Allantoin and triterpene alcohols

Allantoin is known in cosmetics as a common skin-conditioning component and appears in hand creams, lip care, and post-sun care products. Triterpene alcohols (lupeol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin) are compounds studied in phytochemistry literature. Their medical/pharmacological research belongs to the context of human pharmaceutical products and falls outside the scope of this cosmetic monograph; the interest here is in their contribution to the emollient character of the oil by remaining free in the soap.

The review by Honfo and colleagues published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (2014) comprehensively evaluates the nutritional composition and chemical properties of shea products. The notable quality of shea butter from a cosmetic perspective is its high oleic/stearic acid balance and the skin-conditioning (emollient) and film-forming properties of its unsaponifiable fraction. The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) panel evaluated Butyrospermum Parkii Butter as safe for cosmetic use.

Safety profile

The CIR panel considers shea butter safe for cosmetic use. Rare cross-reactivity has been reported in individuals with latex allergy—there is theoretical similarity between Hevea latex and Vitellaria proteins, but clinical significance is very low.

SAP value and usage rate

SAP (NaOH) approximately 0.128. In soap recipes, it is typically used at 5-15% rate: 5% light moisturizing additive; 10% distinct creamy lather and moisturization; 15% intense moisturization (soap may soften); 20%+ excessive softness and difficulty unmolding. Shea butter slows trace—an advantage for complex swirl designs or multicolored patterns, buying time.

Bleached and deodorized shea butter—white and odorless. The unsaponifiable fraction is partially reduced; it may be preferred in formulations sensitive to aroma.

Shea butter is receiving increasing interest in the Turkish cosmetics market, aligned with "natural cosmetics" and "vegan cosmetics" trends. Shea butter is not produced in Turkey—it is entirely import-dependent; it is imported from West Africa (particularly Ghana and Burkina Faso) and is an important raw material for the Turkish cosmetics and soap industry.
