Palm oil, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. (Arecaceae family) is a tropical vegetable oil extracted from the mesocarp of the fruit, appearing as a semi-solid, orange-red substance. As the world's most produced vegetable oil (~77 million tons/year), palm oil is used across a wide spectrum: from soapmaking to food, cosmetics to biofuel. Because the palm oil industry is associated with deforestation, habitat loss and orangutan endangerment, it is the most environmentally debated vegetable oil. This monograph examines the technical value of palm oil in soapmaking, its safety profile and the sustainability debate from a scientific perspective.

Botanical source and production
Elaeis guineensis Jacq. (oil palm) is a tropical palm tree native to West Africa. It reaches 20-25 meters in height and provides economic yield for 25-30 years. Each tree produces approximately 10-15 fruit bunches annually; each bunch weighs 10-25 kg and contains 1,000-3,000 fruits. Two distinct oils are derived from the fruit: palm oil from the mesocarp (orange-red, rich in palmitic acid) and palm kernel oil from the kernel (white, rich in lauric acid — covered separately in another monograph).
More than 85% of world palm oil production is carried out by Indonesia (~58%) and Malaysia (~26%). Nigeria, Thailand, Colombia and Guatemala are other major producers.
Chemical profile
Fatty acid composition
Palm oil has a balanced profile between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids: palmitic acid (C16:0) 40-48%, oleic acid (C18:1) 36-44%, linoleic acid (C18:2) 9-12% and stearic acid (C18:0) 4-6%. This balance gives palm oil a semi-solid consistency at room temperature — it is liquid in tropical climates, soft solid in temperate climates.
Carotenoids: natural color pigments
Crude (unrefined) palm oil is one of the richest sources of carotenoids in the plant world — containing approximately 500-2,000 ppm of carotene. This concentration is 15 times higher than carrots and 300 times higher than tomatoes. β-Carotene and α-carotene are the primary carotenoids. These carotenoids give palm oil its characteristic orange-red color. During refined palm oil (RBD — Refined, Bleached, Deodorized) processing, carotenoids are largely removed and the oil becomes pale yellowish-white.
Tocotrienols and tocopherols
Palm oil is one of the richest natural sources of tocotrienols. Tocotrienols (the unsaturated form of the vitamin E family) have been reported to show far greater antioxidant activity than tocopherols. The vitamin E (tocopherol + tocotrienol) content in crude palm oil is approximately 600-1,200 ppm.
Why is palm oil used in soap?
Contribution to soap structure
Palm oil performs very specific and difficult-to-replace technical functions in soapmaking:
- Hardness: Palmitic acid (40-48%) is one of the most effective fatty acids for imparting structural hardness to soap. Hard soap melts more slowly, lasts longer and maintains bar form better.
- Creamy lather: Palm oil imparts a fine, dense, creamy and stable lather structure to soap — different from the large, airy lather of coconut oil.
- Economical fatty acid source: Palm oil is the most cost-effective vegetable source for palmitic acid.
The "three-legged stool" formula of soapmaking
Classical cold process recipe design is built upon fatty acid balance: coconut oil (lauric acid → abundant, large lather + cleansing) + palm oil (palmitic acid → hardness + creamy lather) + olive oil (oleic acid → moisture + soft feel). This three-part combination is considered the "golden triangle" of soapmaking and forms the foundation of many successful recipes.
Can soap be made without palm oil?
Yes — palm oil alternatives exist but none are perfect substitutes. Shea butter (palmitic + stearic acid source — provides hardness but is more expensive), cocoa butter (stearic acid-rich — provides hardness but much more expensive), tallow/lard (animal fats — palmitic + stearic acid source — not vegan). "Palm-free soap" is possible but costs rise and formulation balance shifts differently.
Is palm oil safe in soap?
Topical safety: no concerns
Palm oil is safe for topical (external) use. The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) panel has determined that Elaeis Guineensis Oil is safe for use in cosmetic products. In the saponification reaction, palm oil reacts with NaOH to transform into sodium palmitate (soap) and glycerin — meaning the final product is not "palm oil" but chemically transformed to soap. Sodium palmitate is one of the most widely used soap salts in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
Palm oil = palmitic acid: already present in the body
Palmitic acid (C16:0) is the most commonly occurring saturated fatty acid in the human body. It is a structural component of skin lipids (ceramides, phospholipids). Approximately 20-25% of the fatty acid profile in human breast milk is composed of palmitic acid. There are no topical cosmetic safety concerns with palmitic acid from palm oil.
Scientific answer to "Is palm oil harmful?"
Discussion of palm oil "harmfulness" must address two distinct contexts: in food (oral consumption) its high saturated fat content has been the subject of cardiovascular health discussions — but this is unrelated to cosmetic use. The environmental context (deforestation, habitat loss) is separate and serious — but concerns production practices, not chemical safety. In cosmetic/soap use, the topical safety of palm oil is undisputed.
Sustainability debate
Environmental concerns
The palm oil industry is associated with serious environmental problems: conversion of tropical rainforests to plantations (particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia), habitat loss for endangered species including orangutans, Sumatran tigers and Borneo elephants, draining of peatland forests (carbon emissions) and violations of indigenous land rights.
RSPO: sustainable palm oil certification
In response to these concerns, the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) was established in 2004. RSPO sets standards for sustainable palm oil production: deforestation ban (No Deforestation), peatland protection (No Peat), exploitation ban (No Exploitation) — the "NDPE" policy. RSPO-certified palm oil comprises approximately 19% of world production (2023 data). Conscious cosmetic producers can support sustainability by using RSPO-certified or Mass Balance palm oil.
However, certification itself is not beyond dispute. A 2020 satellite imagery analysis by Cazzolla Gatti and colleagues published in Science of the Total Environment found that more than 75% of current RSPO-certified concessions in Borneo and Sumatra overlay areas that were habitat for endangered megafauna (orangutans, elephants, rhinoceros) in the 1990s. This finding shows that certification does not solve deforestation alone; "sustainable palm" is not an absolute guarantee but rather a framework open to improvement. Conversely, palm-free alternatives carry their own costs: palm is one of the most productive vegetable oil sources per hectare; replacing it with less productive oils requires more agricultural land — and thus potentially greater habitat pressure. Balanced approach lies in transparent sourcing and responsible procurement.
Is boycotting palm oil a solution?
Paradoxically, complete boycott of palm oil can produce worse environmental outcomes. Palm oil is the most productive vegetable oil source per hectare — producing the same amount of oil from soy, sunflower or canola requires 4-10 times more land. Full boycott could shift demand to less efficient oils, increasing total land use. WWF, Greenpeace and Oxford University researchers advocate "transformation over boycott" — that is, converting the palm oil industry to sustainable practices rather than abandonment.

SAP value and usage rate
The SAP value (NaOH) of palm oil is approximately 0.141. In soap recipes, it is typically used at 15-30%. 25% is a common and balanced ratio. The iodine value is low (~50-55) — indicating the soap will be hard and long-lasting.
Properties it imparts to soap
Palm oil gives soap hardness and durability, a creamy, dense and stable lather, white-cream color (with refined RBD palm oil) or orange-yellow color (with crude palm oil) and extended shelf life (low iodine value — resistant to oxidation).
