The Pistacia genus belongs to the Anacardiaceae (cashew) family and comprises deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs adapted to the hot-dry climates of the Mediterranean and West Asia. The species known as "terebinth" in Southeast Anatolia are generally Pistacia khinjuk Stocks (wild pistachio) and Pistacia atlantica Desf. Pistacia lentiscus (mastic tree / menengiç) is widespread in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions and has a separate use tradition. Pistachio (P. vera) is the cultivated species of the same genus.

Terebinth soap tradition

Terebinth soap is one of the most deeply rooted traditional crafts of Southeast Anatolia. In particular, the autumn harvest of terebinth fruits in Siirt, the extraction of its oil by cold pressing, and the making of soap from this oil through traditional methods (ash water / potash with K⁺ or K₂CO₃ / KOH), generation after generation—generally carried out by women’s hands—remains an actively practiced craft. In terebinth soap-making, ash water (potassium carbonate / potassium hydroxide) derived from the ashes of oak or various plants is traditionally used instead of NaOH—this method represents one of the oldest forms of cold-method soap-making.

Cultural heritage value

Siirt terebinth soap has been included in Turkey’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The nomination process for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List has increased the international recognition of this tradition. Terebinth soap is not merely a cosmetic product; it represents a region’s agricultural identity, women’s labor, and the accumulated traditional knowledge of a community.

Chemical profile

Fatty acid composition

The fatty acid profile of terebinth oil varies by species and geographic source. General composition: oleic acid (40–60%), linoleic acid (15–30%), palmitic acid (15–25%), and stearic acid (2–5%). High oleic acid content supports the oil’s oxidative stability and skin compatibility—this profile resembles olive oil. The oleic acid ratio in P. khinjuk oil is generally higher compared to P. atlantica.

Bioactive compounds

Terebinth oil contains phytosterols (β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol), tocopherols (vitamin E), carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. These compounds are the source of the oil’s antioxidant capacity. Notably, β-sitosterol is a phytosterol associated with skin barrier function.

Volatile oil fraction

The volatile oil composition of terebinth fruit has also been investigated. Major volatile components include α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, terpinolene, and myrcene. These compounds are the source of terebinth oil’s characteristic resinous-nutty aroma.

Antioxidant research

In a study conducted by Benhammou and colleagues (2008), the antioxidant capacity of P. lentiscus and P. atlantica fruit and leaf extracts was evaluated using the DPPH radical scavenging method. Both species were reported to show significant antioxidant activity. A positive correlation was found between phenolic compound content and antioxidant capacity.

Antimicrobial properties

The antimicrobial activity of leaf and fruit extracts of Pistacia species has been examined in various studies. In vitro activity against gram-positive bacteria and some fungal species has been reported. This activity is associated with phenolic compounds and terpenoids.

Mastic (mastik) tradition: Pistacia lentiscus

Pistacia lentiscus mastic (mastik), a resin known since antiquity and traditionally used for medicinal purposes. Chios mastic, produced on Chios Island, is protected by the EU with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status and appears on Greece’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of mastic have been confirmed in modern research literature. P. lentiscus fruit oil is known as "menengiç oil" in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions.

Traditional medicine and ethnopharmacology

In a study published in Phytotherapy Research by Dogan and colleagues (2003), plants used in traditional soap-making in Turkey were comprehensively documented. Terebinth oil appears as an important component in these ethnopharmacological studies.

Safety profile

Terebinth oil is generally considered safe for topical application based on its history of traditional use. Long-standing data on traditional use (centuries) supports its safety profile. However, the Pistacia genus belongs to the Anacardiaceae family—this family also includes known allergenic plants such as Mango (Mangifera indica) and Sumac (Rhus). Cross-reactivity in highly sensitive individuals is theoretically possible, but it is rarely reported in practice.

Terebinth oil in soap-making

Traditional method

Traditional Siirt terebinth soap is made with terebinth oil and ash water (a solution of potassium carbonate prepared from the ashes of oak or various plants). This method resembles modern NaOH-based cold method but produces a somewhat softer soap due to its potassium base. In traditional preparation, the soap batter is cooked in large vats (hot process) and poured into molds.

Modern cold-process use

Terebinth oil can be used as a primary oil in modern cold-process soap-making at a concentration of 20–50%. The SAP value (NaOH) is approximately 0.135–0.140—similar to olive oil. The iodine value is moderate. It is typically combined with olive oil and coconut oil to form a balanced recipe.

Properties imparted to soap

Terebinth oil imparts a greenish tint, a subtle nutty-resinous-herbal aroma character, a creamy lather structure, and a moisturizing feel to the soap. Its high oleic acid content leaves a soft feel on the skin. Traditional terebinth soaps are recognized by their green-brown hues and distinctive aromas.
