Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, belonging to the Rutaceae (citrus) family, is a fruit tree native to Southeast Asia (southern China and northeast India). Orange is the most widely produced citrus fruit in the world — annual production exceeds 75 million tons. Major producing countries include Brazil, China, the United States (Florida, California), Spain, and Egypt. In Turkey, it is widely cultivated in the Mediterranean Region (Mersin, Adana, Antalya, Hatay).
Sweet orange oil is obtained through mechanical pressing of the fruit peel (cold press / cold-pressed / expressed). Being a by-product of orange juice production, it is obtained in large quantities, making sweet orange oil the most economical among citrus essential oils. Annual global production is approximately 50,000 tons.
Chemical profile
Limonene: almost pure monoterpene (85-97%)
Sweet orange oil has the highest limonene concentration among citrus essential oils. d-Limonene (R-(+)-limonene), the most common monoterpene, is the primary source of "citrus fragrance". Limonene, while found in many plants in nature, is present in the highest concentration in citrus oils. The fact that sweet orange oil is almost pure limonene (85-97%) makes it a versatile raw material in both aromatherapy and industrial applications.
Limonene also has strong solvent properties — used in industrial cleaning products, degreasing agents, and as a natural alternative to synthetic solvents (petroleum-based). This solvent property is one of the reasons why sweet orange oil gives a "deep cleansing" sensation on the skin.
Other components
Other components of sweet orange oil (totaling 3-15%): myrcene (1-3%), linalool (0.1-0.5%), decanal (0.3-1% — source of the "fresh orange" scent note), octanal, citral, α-pinene, and sabinene. These minor components create the "lively, fresh, and natural" fragrance profile of sweet orange oil — pure limonene alone cannot provide this rich scent profile.

Antimicrobial research
In a comprehensive review published by Dosoky and Setzer (2018) in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, the biological activities and safety profiles of citrus essential oils were evaluated. Sweet orange oil has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), some gram-negative bacteria, and fungi (Aspergillus, Penicillium species) in in vitro studies. Limonene is considered the primary agent responsible for this activity through a cell membrane disruption mechanism.
Aromatherapy context
Sweet orange oil is classified in aromatherapy as a "stimulating", "uplifting", and "energizing" oil. Some inhalation studies exist in the context of anxiety and stress management. The effectiveness of sweet orange oil diffusion in dental clinics to reduce patient anxiety has been investigated — some positive findings have been reported, but evidence is not yet conclusive.

Phototoxicity
The phototoxicity profile of cold-pressed sweet orange oil is controversial. According to IFRA assessment, cold-pressed sweet orange oil has a lower phototoxicity risk compared to bergamot and lemon oil — however, some sources recommend caution. Distilled sweet orange oil (obtained through steam distillation) is not phototoxic because furanocoumarins do not pass through distillation.
Limonene and contact allergy
Limonene is among the components requiring allergen notification in the EU Cosmetic Regulation. However, the actual source of allergic reactions is not fresh limonene itself, but rather oxidation products (limonene hydroperoxides). When sweet orange oil comes into contact with air and light, limonene oxidizes and contact allergy potential increases. For this reason, the use of fresh, properly stored oil (dark, cool, sealed container, under inert gas) is critical. The shelf life of opened sweet orange oil is 6-12 months.

Addition method and ratio
Sweet orange oil is added to soap at the trace stage, generally used at 3-6% of the total oil amount. In alkaline environments, limonene may undergo some transformations — for this reason, the scent changes over time.
Fragrance profile and major disadvantage: fragrance loss
Sweet orange oil imparts a fresh, energetic, "squeezed orange peel" fragrance to soap — this fragrance profile is extremely recognizable and beloved. However, sweet orange oil's major disadvantage in soapmaking is its very low fragrance retention capacity. Limonene is a highly volatile monoterpene and quickly evaporates from soap. After 2-3 months, the fragrance can virtually disappear.
Strategies to enhance fragrance retention
Soapmakers employ various strategies to overcome this disadvantage: litsea cubeba / may chang oil (with its citral content supports the citrus note and is more lasting), benzoin resin (fixative — heavy base note), patchouli oil (fixative — earthy note), orange peel powder addition (both visual appeal and fragrance support — oil cells gradually release fragrance) and high-ratio sweet orange oil usage (5-6%) to enhance initial fragrance intensity.
Combination with orange peel powder
Adding dried and ground orange peel powder together with sweet orange oil is a very common practice in soapmaking. Orange peel powder provides mild exfoliation (dead skin cell removal), orange-brown colored particles, and additional fragrance support to the soap.
