Patchouli oil is not obtained from fresh leaves but from dried and lightly fermented leaves — this process breaks down cell walls, allowing more efficient extraction of the oil.

In the export of Indian silk and cashmere shawls to Europe, patchouli leaves were placed between fabrics to protect them from moths and insects. It also contains α-patchoulene (5–15%), β-patchoulene (2–5%), α-guaiene (5–15%), seichelen (3–8%), and nor-patchoulol (1–3%) sesquiterpenes.
