This is a research finding regarding the chemical behavior of the substance.
Linalyl Acetate (25–47%)
Linalyl acetate, the second main component of lavender oil, is the acetate ester of linalool and is the primary source of the oil's characteristic "sweet-floral" scent profile. From a cosmetic standpoint, the signature scent note of lavender oil derives from this component.
Other Components
Other components of lavender oil include lavandulol, lavandulyl acetate, 1,8-cineol (eucalyptol), camphor, β-caryophyllene, terpinen-4-ol, and limonene. Oils with low camphor content are rated as cosmetic grade; high camphor content suggests admixture with "spike lavender" (L. latifolia) (Białoń et al., 2019).
In Vitro Microbiology Research
In a review by Cavanagh and Wilkinson in Phytotherapy Research (2002), lavender oil was reported to show activity against gram-positive bacteria (especially Staphylococcus aureus), some gram-negative bacteria, and certain fungal species under in vitro conditions. In a study by Białoń and colleagues (2019), lavender oil with higher monoterpenoid content showed more pronounced effects on facial skin microbiota.
