Since the term “natural” has no official definition in cosmetics regulations, the real guide for a conscious consumer is the product's INCI list, production method, and the manufacturer's level of transparency. This article explores step by step what to look for when evaluating a soap as “natural”, the practice of reading INCI lists, and common marketing traps.

First step: Find and read the INCI list

INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the universal language of cosmetic products. The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC/1223/2009) and Turkish Cosmetics Regulation require all cosmetic products to display their ingredient list in INCI format. The INCI list orders ingredients by concentration (highest to lowest) — this rule applies to ingredients above 1%; ingredients below 1% may be listed in any order.

Saponified oil names (Sodium ___ate)

Cold process soaps can display the INCI list in two different ways:

Why is “Aqua” listed first?

Many cold process soaps have Aqua (water) first in their INCI list. This does not mean the soap is mostly water — water is used to prepare the NaOH solution, and per INCI rules, the ingredient with the highest concentration is listed first. During the curing process, a significant portion of the water evaporates.

Red flags: signals of “non-natural”

If a soap's INCI list contains the following ingredients, the product is likely not produced using traditional saponification or contains synthetic additives:

Synthetic surfactants

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), Cocamidopropyl Betaine — these are synthetic detergent surfactants and are not saponification products. A product containing SLS/SLES is technically not “soap” but a “syndet bar” (synthetic detergent bar).

Synthetic preservatives

Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Methylisothiazolinone (MI), Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) — cold process soaps have a naturally high pH (9-10) that inhibits microbial growth and requires no preservatives. The presence of these ingredients suggests the product is not a traditional soap or has a different formulation.

Synthetic colorants and fragrances

FD&C or D&C coded colorants (FD&C Yellow No.5, D&C Red No.33) are synthetic dyes. “Parfum” or “Fragrance” indicates synthetic fragrance components — though some manufacturers use “Parfum” for natural essential oil blends as well (EU regulations permit this).

EDTA and BHT

Disodium EDTA (chelating agent) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene — synthetic antioxidant) are common synthetic additives in industrial formulations. Natural soap recipes typically do not require these.

Green flags: quality indicators

Botanical oil diversity

Seeing multiple botanical oils in the INCI list (olive oil, coconut oil, hazelnut oil, cocoa butter) suggests the manufacturer has made a conscious recipe design. Each oil contributes different properties to soap (lather structure, hardness, moisturizing) and a balanced recipe requires combining various oils.

Essential oils and natural fragrance

INCI list entries with specific essential oil names (Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil) show that the fragrance source is clearly specified as natural.

Natural additives

Natural additions like Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (aloe vera), Mel / Honey, Goat Milk, Carbon (activated charcoal), Bentonite (bentonite clay), Sulfur show that the manufacturer has added functional ingredients to the soap.

Curing time and date information

Cold process soaps require 4-6 weeks of curing. A manufacturer's transparent information about production date, curing time, and expiration date is a quality indicator.

E-E-A-T perspective: manufacturer's expertise

Within Google's E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) framework, the cosmetic manufacturer's level of expertise is an important trust indicator. The manufacturer's chemistry or cosmetic science education, responsible person information, production facility details, and certifications are factors that support consumer confidence.

Common marketing traps

“Chemical-free” claims

This is scientifically meaningless — every substance, including water (H₂O), is a chemical. This statement has potential to mislead consumers. The EU Cosmetics Regulation's rules on claims (EC/655/2013) prohibit the use of misleading and vague statements.

“Paraben-free” focus

The “paraben-free” statement is not by itself a quality indicator — cold process soaps already require no preservatives (high pH). A soap manufacturer using this phrase is actually emphasizing the absence of something that wasn't there to begin with. “Sulfate-free soap” is a similar trap — real soaps don't contain sulfates (SLS/SLES) anyway.

“100% natural” claims

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) used in the saponification reaction is chemically synthesized — it is not obtained from a natural source. Therefore, the phrase “100% natural soap” is technically debatable. The COSMOS standard resolves this by classifying NaOH as an “allowed processing chemical.”
