Goat milk, derived from Capra aegagrus hircus, has been one of humanity's oldest milk sources. Goat milk naturally contains lactic acid — an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). In dermatology and cosmetic literature, lactic acid is one of the most researched AHAs in the context of gentle exfoliation (removal of dead skin cells), skin renewal and hydration. Lactic acid is also being researched for its potential to stimulate ceramide synthesis — ceramides are fundamental building blocks of the skin barrier. However, the lactic acid concentration in goat milk (0.15–0.25%) is much lower than in professional chemical peeling products (5–30%). In soap making, this effect is further diminished as pH rises.

Fatty acid profile: short-chain advantage

Goat milk fat is richer in short and medium-chain fatty acids compared to cow milk: capric acid (C10), caprylic acid (C8) and caproic acid (C6). These short-chain fatty acids provide easier absorption and a lighter feel on skin. In a comprehensive comparative study published in Small Ruminant Research by Park et al. (2007), the physicochemical properties of goat milk were compared in detail with cow milk.

Goat milk fat globules are on average smaller than those in cow milk (goat: ~3.5 µm, cow: ~4.5 µm). Smaller fat globules provide more homogeneous distribution — this property is considered to result in smoother texture and better absorption potential in cosmetic formulations.

Vitamin and mineral content

Goat milk contains vitamin A (retinol), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin D and various minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium). While vitamin A is associated with skin renewal, B vitamins may support skin barrier health, and zinc contributes to normal skin maintenance and is studied for antimicrobial activity. However, how much of these vitamins remains in active form during saponification is debated — high pH and the exothermic reaction may degrade some vitamins.

The pH of goat milk (approximately 6.4–6.7) is slightly closer to human skin's natural pH (approximately 4.5–5.5) than cow milk. This property is considered a theoretical advantage for skin compatibility of goat milk-based cosmetic products. However, after reaction with NaOH in soap making, pH rises to approximately 9–10, largely eliminating this natural pH advantage in soap form.

Hydration and emollient properties

Goat milk's rich fat content (3.5–4.5%) and protein structure carry potential moisturizing and softening effects in cosmetic products. Casein and whey (serum) proteins can form a thin film on skin surface, reducing moisture loss. Addition method: "freeze method"

In goat milk soap making, goat milk is used instead of water or together with water in preparing the alkaline solution (lye solution). A critical technical point: when NaOH is added directly to liquid goat milk, the exothermic reaction caramelizes sugars (lactose) in the milk — creating unwanted dark orange-brown color, burnt smell and ammonia odor. For this reason, experienced soapmakers employ the "freeze method": goat milk is frozen into ice cubes, NaOH is added slowly to the frozen milk cubes and stirred. The ice absorbs the heat of the exothermic reaction, preventing caramelization. Alternatively, the "split method" is also used: half of the NaOH is mixed with water, half with milk.
