Calophyllum inophyllum L., belonging to the Calophyllaceae family, is a large (20-30m), evergreen coastal tree native to Southeast Asia, India, East Africa and Pacific islands. It is distinguished by its shiny dark green leaves, white flowers and small green-yellow drupe fruits. The tree is salt and wind tolerant and grows naturally in the coastal zone.

Tamanu oil is an important component of traditional culture, particularly in Polynesia (Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu), Melanesia and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar). Known as “dilo oil” in Fiji, “ati” or “tamanu” in Tahiti, and “dầu mù u” in Vietnam. The medical aspects of these traditional uses belong to the human product context; below the substance is addressed as a cosmetic ingredient.

Production: the aging process

Tamanu oil production is unique. Freshly harvested fruits are not pressed directly — because fresh seeds contain very little oil. Fruits are dried in the sun for 1-2 months; during this time the seeds turn dark brown and oil content increases dramatically (can reach approximately 75% of dry weight). This aging process plays a critical role in the formation of tamanu oil’s distinctive compounds (calophyllolide, calophyl lactone). The dried seeds are then cold-pressed to obtain a dark green, viscous, intensely aromatic oil.

Fatty acid composition

Tamanu oil contains: oleic acid (34-41%), linoleic acid (21-38%), palmitic acid (12-18%) and stearic acid (8-18%). This balance between oleic and linoleic acid gives the oil an emollient (skin-softening) and film-forming cosmetic quality.
