Botanical source
Laurus nobilis L., of the Lauraceae (laurel) family, is an evergreen tree or large shrub native to the Mediterranean basin. Its dark green, shiny, leathery aromatic leaves are essential in Turkish cuisine — bay leaves in meat and vegetable dishes. In ancient Greece, bay represented victory and wisdom — the "laurel wreath" was placed on Olympic champions and poets; the words "baccalauréat" and "laureate" derive from the Latin "laurus" (bay).
Turkey holds an important position in global bay leaf production. Hatay (Daphne — the ancient city named after the bay tree), Muğla, Antalya, and Mersin are major production regions. Turkey's bay leaf and bay oil exports represent a significant agricultural income source.

Main components
According to GC-MS analyses of bay leaf essential oil, major components are: 1,8-cineole / eucalyptol (25-50% — fresh, refreshing scent), linalool (5-18%), α-terpinyl acetate (5-12%), sabinene (3-10%), α-pinene (3-8%), terpinen-4-ol (2-5%), β-pinene (2-5%), methyl eugenol (1-5%), and eugenol (0.5-3%). Composition can vary significantly by geographic region and harvest time (Fidan et al., 2019).
1,8-Cineole: primary component
1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol, C₁₀H₁₈O), the main component of bay leaf oil, is the source of the fresh-camphoraceous-refreshing scent note. The same component is found in high concentrations in eucalyptus and rosemary oils. In phytochemical literature, 1,8-cineole is studied as a monoterpene with antimicrobial properties.
Antimicrobial chemistry: in vitro research
In a study published by Fidan and colleagues in the Molecules journal (2019), the chemical composition and in vitro antimicrobial activity of Laurus nobilis leaf essential oil were evaluated; the leaf oil demonstrated inhibitory activity against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and Candida species. 1,8-Cineole and linalool are considered primary contributors to this activity. These findings are from laboratory conditions and do not constitute a product efficacy claim; the medicinal/traditional uses of substances belong in the beaux-arts products context and are outside this cosmetic monograph's scope.
Safety profile
Bay leaf essential oil is generally considered safe in topical cosmetic use at low concentrations (0.5-3%). Important cautions:
- Contact dermatitis: Lactones in bay leaf oil (particularly costunolid and dehydrocostus lactone) may cause contact allergy; contact dermatitis from bay leaf is reported in Europe.
- Allergen declaration: Linalool and eugenol are among the components requiring allergen declaration under EU regulation.

Usage rate and method
Bay leaf essential oil is added at the trace stage in soap-making at 2-4% concentration. Should not be mixed with bay fruit oil — fruit oil is used as a fixed oil component in the recipe; leaf oil is used as a fragrance provider essential oil.

Bay leaf oil imparts a fresh, herbal, slightly camphoraceous, and spicy scent profile to soap. Scent retention capacity is moderate; color contribution is minimal. Bay leaf soap is positioned as a modern interpretation of Aleppo soap tradition — combining the structural contribution of fruit oil with the aromatic character of leaf oil.
